The Mayor's Manor has been expanded, and the grounds are being upgraded. |
Mayor’s Report:
Governor Dongan, an avowed Catholic and soldier for
France in their earlier war against the Dutch, summoned a representative
assembly of all the settlements of New York. A Charter of Liberties was passed
into law. It decrees that the supreme legislative power under the Duke of
York shall reside in a governor, council, and the people convened in general
assembly; confers upon the members of the assembly rights and privileges
making them a body coequal to and independent of the British Parliament;
establishes town, county, and general courts of justice; solemnly proclaims
the right of religious liberty; and passes acts enunciating certain
constitutional liberties, such as taxes can be levied only by the people met in
general assembly; right of suffrage; and no martial law or quartering of the
soldiers without the consent of the inhabitants.
This is an incredible development for the province and
for our town. This should lead to more growth and trade opportunities.
Food reserves are exceptionally strong, yet the amount
of iron and tools available remains a concern.
My seat as mayor is up for election this year, and
while no one has yet announced they will run against me, I don’t expect I
will win again without a fight. Laver Foure’s seat is also up for election.
